Plenary: Connection Before Content: Focus on Your Audience Before Your Data

Wednesday, November 10, 10:45 am – 12:15 pm

To communicate effectively, speakers must connect with their audiences. And that interpersonal rapport facilitates the better assimilation of content. But scientists often struggle to reach audiences because they prioritize the information about which they’re speaking, instead of the humans they’re speaking with.

Breaking through the distractions and noise of our current environment is very challenging.

In his talk, Brian will share some best practices for interpersonal communications which include presenting, collaborating and connecting with others. All in service of advancing your science.

Connection Before Content: The Workshop

Wednesday, November 10, 1:30 pm – 3:00 pm

To communicate effectively, speakers must connect with their audiences, and that interpersonal rapport facilitates the better assimilation of content. But scientists often struggle to reach audiences because they prioritize the information about which they’re speaking instead of the humans they’re speaking with.

Breaking through the distractions and noise of our current environment is very challenging, particularly when your content is not very accessible to some audiences.

Strong interpersonal connection skills are a positive differentiator for you.  And by serving your audience more effectively, you are serving yourself and your scientific work. Building rapport is a learnable trait.

In this workshop, Brian will share some best practices to amplify your communication skills by combining lecture with informal exercises allowing participants to engage experientially.
