Student Networking Event

When: Monday, Nov. 8th from 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM

Where: Baltimore Marriott Inner Harbor – Grand Ballroom

Come network with professionals and fellow fisheries students in a laid-back and fun environment! This will be a backyard picnic style event complete with dinner, giant indoor lawn games, and lots of networking opportunities. Students will receive dinner (vegan and gluten free options available) and a free drink.

Student Activities Fundraiser

When: Sunday, November 7th from 7:00 PM – 9:30 PM

Where: The Pratt Street Ale House; 206 W Pratt St 

Come enjoy good food and drinks with colleagues at the Pratt Street Ale House! A quick walk from the conference center, Pratt Street Ale House has delicious food and a wide selection of beverages. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to fund student activities at future Annual Meetings.

Careers in Fisheries Roundtable

(Note: This event was formerly named the Student Mentoring Event.)

When: Sunday, November 7th from

1:30 PM – 3:00 PM

Where: Baltimore Marriott Inner Harbor – Grand Ballroom

Meet professionals with varied careers and learn how to be successful when applying for jobs, graduate school, internships, and postdocs. This event will have lightning talks by professionals describing what they do so attendees can see the diversity of careers available to fisheries professionals. Afterwards, each professional will be stationed at a different table and students will rotate between tables in order to ask professionals their questions.

Student-Professional Pair-Up (in-person and virtual)

When: Throughout the meeting

Where: Up to student-professional pair

The student-professional pair-up gives students a chance for individualized mentoring during the Annual Meeting. Ideally, paired students and professionals will meet early on in the meeting and continue to interact throughout the duration of the meeting in order to get the most out of this mentoring experience.

 

Interested students and professionals are paired up and introduced via email. It will be up to the student-professional pairs to decide on a meeting time and location. Some suggested (in-person) locations include: hotel lobby near reception and the AFS bookstore booth in the Tradeshow.

First Timers' Match-Up

When: Saturday, Nov. 6th from 5:30 PM – 7 PM (before/during the Welcome Social)

Where: Baltimore Marriott Inner Harbor – Promenade

Is this your first time attending the AFS Annual Meeting! Want to have a conference buddy to attend networking events and socials with? This event will pair interested students and early career professionals with other interested individuals. The goal is to introduce students/early career professionals and provide a time for the pairs to get to know each other before the big Welcome Social. Ideally, pairs will help each other navigate the Annual Meeting and will increase their peer network.

Student Trivia

When: Tuesday, Nov. 9th from 1:00 – 2:30 PM

Where: Baltimore Marriott Inner Harbor – University Rooms 3 & 4

Come test your knowledge against other AFS students with an informal 5 rounds of fishy trivia. Prizes will be awarded to the winners!

Virtual Escape Room

When: Moderated sessions available in the evenings on November 5th, 6th, 7th, 9th, or, anytime on your own!

Where: Online & Slack

This event is designed to facilitate interactions among students and professionals who are not able to attend the meeting in-person, but who want to enjoy socializing with colleagues in a unique, fun way. In-person attendees are also welcome to join!

Those who are interested can sign up for time slots and join a Slack community to find a group to play with, or can do the escape room on their own! Look for an email in the coming weeks with sign-up information and times.

Behind the scenes at the National Aquarium

When: Monday, November 8th and Tuesday, November 9th in the afternoons (multiple time slots)

Where: Animal Care and Rescue Center (ACRC) located at 901 E Fayette St Baltimore MD 21202 (Uber or similar transportation recommended)

The staff at the National Aquarium is taking AFS behind the scenes with a tour of the Aquarium’s Animal Care and Rescue Center! This is open to all meeting attendees. All attendees must wear masks and closed-toed shoes and arrive in the lobby of the ACRC 5-10 minutes early for tours, so plan accordingly! All tours will be about 45 minutes and are limited to 15 people. Space is limited – look for an email coming soon to sign up! The tour slots are filled on a first-come first-served basis.
